Yeah, same, I don't think people realize that kids can just end up weird sometimes. It's not always "something must have happened to make them that way!!!"

That's why I don't like it, I guess. I wanted a little resemblance between the parents and kids.

I can accept the idea that kids can turn out random and I don't have a problem with Mycroft & Sherlock coming from relatively normal parents in terms of their personalities & intelligence. Or it's Niles & Frasier all over again with the kids taking after smart mom instead of average dad. That's fine.

The sticking point for me is Mycroft's job. I just can't picture anyone having a job as high up and with as much power in the government as he's supposed to have, at a relatively young age too, unless he came from a powerful, influential family. The meritocracy might get you into an average civil service post, but the big wigs usually get there because of influential family ties, money, and similar connections.

I also can't picture him building a sufficient network at school to get such a job either since I'd imagine the Eton/Harrow crowd who have that influence and those ties wouldn't be too eager to give a hand up to a kid from a no-name, likely middle-class family, no matter how smart he is. It's not impossible, but it keeps me from finding the canon version of the Holmes parents entirely believable.

Mycroft's high position is my main problem with the 'ordinary parents' in canon too.

The top reaches of the British system are so incredibly class-ridden and jobs-for-the-boys that Mycroft couldn't have reached them without strong connections, no matter how clever he was. Especially since he's supposed to be lazy (or at least according to the writers). It's just unconvincing.

Maybe one (or both) of the parents is the younger, rebellious child of someone influential? Having a grandparent with connections could help a lot. It wouldn't be that odd for Mycroft to get a lot of help from the grandparents, particularly if he was the oldest grandchild.

This is what I was thinking. They could be the hippie children if wealthy, influential families who eschewed a lot of the trappings of wealth and had little need for the influence, but their sons gained from it anyway.

It's perfectly possible to be a high-flying civil servant with Mycroft's background. Perfectly possible for his parents to have had enough money to have sent him to Eton/Harrow/Rugby etc - once glance at their house tells you they are more than comfortable, and there are generous scholarships available.

The idea that it's all sewn up between people with titles is simplistic to the point of error.
