If you were also the earlier anon wondering why Sam/Dean became popular, I think the answer to that lies in the early seasons where it was pretty much the only game in town. --And, to be fair, they have a remarkably co-dependent relationship and I'm not sure adding sex would make it any closer or any more fucked up. But mostly I'd attribute it to the three-season near-monopoly.

Definitely this.

I shipped Wincest at first because there was nothing else to ship, but during S2 my interest in it waned.. and by the third season I couldn't ship it anymore. (Then Cas walked in and the rest is history...)

I feel like the only reason (well, okay, the main reason) Castiel became so popular so quickly was because he provided another shipping option for Dean, besides his brother, his father, his father figure, etc.

Personally, though, I ship Wincest because I like their dynamic. (Only for fic purposes, obviously. I don't care what happens in the show, I don't watch it for that)
