Re: Depression and Doctors

(Anonymous) 2014-02-19 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Disclaimer: I haven't gone on any psychological meds, so no firsthand experience.

I'm pretty sure that a gynecologist can't actually prescribe meds for depression. And even if they can, you'd want to see someone with training and experience in handling medicating depression, since there's a lot of med options out there, and you'll probably need to try several before you find the right one and the right dosage.

My advice would be to start with "Can I ask you for some advice about some mental health issues I've been having?" They may not feel comfortable or familiar enough to provide advice on that, but they can probably at least recommend a specialist for you. If they do agree to provide advice, you can then ask about going on medication, but again, they will probably suggest you see a mental health specialist, rather than a gynecologist for the actual prescription.

Good luck, however it goes! And I hope you can find help for the depression as quickly as possible!
