I've read Europeans saying (and not very nicely) that the mumbly effect is actually part of the Danish accent and it's hard to catch when applied to other languages too, but since I wouldn't be able to tell whether it's equally incomprehensible when Mikkelsen speaks, say, German…I have no idea if that's true or a nasty stereotype.

I think it's a bad stereotype that is somewhat based in reality. There are a lot of Danish people who don't mumble when they speak another language (myself included), but there are also many who do. Mads Mikkelsen is one who does mumble, though its strange watching him on Hannibal because he definitely mumbles in the show more than he does in interviews and I'm curious as to why that is. If it's a directorial choice, it seems like an odd one to make. Maybe its because English is my second language but I have a terrible time trying to understand him :/
