The child in the apartment next to mine is screaming its fool head off, jumping up and down and is 70 percent of the reason I want a house. But I'd settle for some earplugs.

I asked this of a friend yesterday. Why do children sound like they are being brutally murdered when, in fact, they are only simply playing?

I was eating dinner tonight during an off hour when it was nice and quiet and then this dude brings his kids in (around age 3 though one was older than the other) and they started running around literally screeching at each other while playing and he didn't EVEN DO ANYTHING. He just looked at them occasionally and never tried to correct them. Pretty sure it's a major part of why I got a big headache tonight.

And I really like kids, just, for fuck's sake teach them how to behave. When you have three-year-olds, they are your responsibility and you are being incredibly rude by letting them make such a disruption without any kind of correction or calming-down.

I answer phones for a living and I've had a couple of people call recently with their kids howling like banshees in the background. With one lady it got to the point where I simply stopped talking in mid-sentence every time the little rat bastard went off. There was no point, I'd just have had to repeat myself anyway.

did she...do anything about it?

(the answer is probably "no" but...)

She made a few half-hearted and totally ineffective attempts to shush the kid.

Personally I'd have plunked him or her into a playpen, walked into another room and shut the door, or better yet, apologized and called back later. But I guess that's expecting too much.

I think the first option you gave is the best one because 95% of the time if a kid is making attention-getting noise the best thing to do is refuse to give them attention. That's what encourages them to keep doing it.

my neighbors' kids are like this. all they do is scream like monkeys being tortured.
