Is that only the case with movies? People seem to still get called out here for spoiling books.

I don't know. I think people get weird about spoiling shows/movies by bringing up things that happened in the book in a discussion about the show/movie.

All I can think about, because it was such a shit show, and because it was relevant to my interests, was that time when someone posted a Wheel of Time secret, and some people thought it was spoilery for the last book. So they started freaking out, and OP tried to do damage control. But then some idiot showed up and actually spoiled the last book and there was a huge meltdown.
