Link from Ocarina of Time. Sure, he's mostly okay during the game, but wait until you get to Twilight Princess...

Actually, Zelda probably qualifies too. So many guilt issues :( (And that's even without the downfall timeline!)

That is an interesting take on things.

Twilight Princess is one of my favorite things in the world. What's your take on Link that makes him broken/emotionally shattered? (And Zelda, for that matter?)

It's more the description of the Hero's Shade in Hyrule Historia than anything in-game - they said that he only remained as the Hero's Shade as an expression of his regrets. And honestly, regrets that are strong enough to force you to remain lingering for a few centuries as a decaying skeleton are probably pretty bad ones, so you can fairly safely judge that he was pretty damn unhappy when he died. (And seriously, the events of OoT and MM are pretty damn traumatic!)

For Zelda, it's mostly her feelings of guilt at the end of Ocarina - she looks pretty distraught and tells Link that it's all her fault. "All the tragedy that has befallen Hyrule was my doing..." My poor girl :( It's exponentially worse in the downfall timeline, where she has the added guilt of Link's death, too. (It's NOT her fault, but she'd blame herself, I think.)
