lmao @ everyone getting so up-in-arms over sports being mentioned. playing sports is healthy. maybe they're not for everyone, but kids should be encouraged to participate in them.

note that i'm saying "encouraged," not "forced."

the problem with this is that (IME) physical education, in the US anyway, forces sports on everybody. Result: gym class teaches people who aren't good at sports to hate physical activity and associate it with misery and public humiliation.

Well, sure, blown-out knees and concussions are the epitome of healthy.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-20 06:36 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, 28-year-old me with sports-related dings and bruises from childhood that are just gonna get worse thinks that "sports" are super-healthy.

But seriously. "They're fat, they must not exercise" is such bullcrap.

I hear you, I'm really surprised that everyone's getting up in arms about it.

Like, I get they're not everyone's cup of tea and there's some injury issues within some of them, but they're a good way to exercise, which is part of being healthy.

I think it was more the suggestion by the original anon that everyone must play them, as if they're the only form of exercise.

Children should be encouraged to exercise. Organized sports are not for everyone.

I don't know, I think that all kids should play an organized sport at least once in their lives just because it teaches valuable lessons in teamwork that I don't feel I got the equivalent of from anything else. Even if it's just something like a kickball game in PE, it's a good experience. Nothing says they have to continue it throughout the rest of their lives.

alright, I can see where you're coming from with that. I do think it's a good idea to encourage kids to try different activities so they have an idea of what they like and want to pursue. It's also a good idea to encourage kids to be active and find fun ways to be active that they enjoy. If your kid tries sports and hates it, find something else. But I can see why having them try it once can be a good thing.

I do think there are other ways for people to learn teamwork - sports isn't the only thing that requires teamwork at all.
