Fic gift exchanges/charity fics

(Anonymous) 2014-02-20 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
It's been over a year since I won fic and it's been almost a year since the author even bothered to either work or update it. I've let them know I'm still in their corner, but at the same time I'm frustrated because I haven't even gotten a 3rd of my fic yet.

I realize blahblahblah it was for charity, but it's so annoying to see the author working on other fics. I'm happy my money went to support a good cause but at the same time, I was really, really looking forward to this fic. It's kinda ruined my experience not only with the author, but with a large part of the fandom. I can't read other fics with my OTP without thinking about this, either.

Has anyone else had this happen before?

I was also hoping for an update by my birthday, which was last week :( It would have made me feel better because most of my friends forgot (there was another thing that weekend that I understand took priority) and it really didn't feel like my birthday.

I was on the other side and believe me when I tell you it caused me massive amounts of guilt. In my case, I completely lost my muse for the fandom I was supposed to write in and never got it back. I felt horrible and guilty even though the recipient (who was already a friend) kept reassuring me that she was cool and didn't hate me. I promised her I'd write something else for her and I still haven't since I still don't have much of a muse these days :/

In your case, where the person is working on other fics...that sounds kinda crappy, but I can't judge because I have no ground to stand on.

I hope this doesn't sour you on charity fics forever because not everyone flakes on the follow-through.

See, I'd totally understand if they lost their muse or weren't in fandom anymore. But they're working on fics still of my OTP :/

Also. Kicker. I actually didn't win the auction for the author, but the author got permission to do "second-chance" type offers of the winning bid to the others who bid by the auction hosts. I'm not sure how many others accepted, but the winning bid was 100$ for 10k words.

I don't know if I'll ever participate in a charity auction again, but I'd consider donating directly to the charity instead.
