Re: Favorite "broken, emotionally shattered" characters
(Anonymous) 2014-02-20 06:13 am (UTC)(link)I felt sorry for Milah, too, before she took off with Captain Sleezebag. She reacted to Rumple's crippling himself in basically the worst possible way from the word go, and she resented that Rumple destroyed his (and by extension her) social standing and prospects for their son's sake so much that she probably resented Bae almost as much as she resented Rumple, and she probably hated her husband for making her resent her son. She didn't want to get stuck in a bitty village with people who hated her husband and probably spat at her in the street. I think she loved her husband until suddenly she hated him, and hating someone for that long before she couldn't stand it anymore and ran for it probably made her miserable.
I don't know that I'd call Belle, Snow, or Ruby emotionally shattered or broken. They've been there, and poor Belle is right in the middle again, probably, but generally they don't stay there. Characters that do tend to spend centuries plotting to destroy their world to get to the kid they let go of in a moment of paralyzing fear, or rip out hearts and use them to puppet people, or try and kill their adopted son's true love, or spend 300+ years plotting the death of an immortal trickster who ripped out his true love's heart because his true love was the immortal trickster's ex who walked out on him...
Man, this show is fucked up... I still love it. I just hope next season, if the show gets a next season, lays off the soap-opera drama and goes back to having light-hearted (pun not intended) character driven episodes instead of magical mcguffins, parents from hell, and constant imminent doom. I miss season 1. And if they kill off Nealfire, I'm down to only giving a shit about Emma, Henry, Rumple, Belle, and some minor characters, some of whom haven't been seen since season 1. I like Regina and the Charmings, but they're not enough to keep me watching the show. I'd watch a Granny and the Dwarves spinoff, though.
Re: Favorite "broken, emotionally shattered" characters
(Anonymous) 2014-02-20 02:56 pm (UTC)(link)I've never really felt bad for Cora, but that was mostly because I've been too busy watching her with delighted awe, admiration, and stunned horror. She's just so stunning. I think I disagree with you a little bit, I think she did understand love when she ripped her heart out, she knew exactly what Rumple made her feel, and that's why she ripped it out. Because while she may have understood what she was feeling perfectly, what she didn't understand was how that feeling might have value in a world where loving someone got you shit on more often than not (and really, given the way love normally goes on this show, she may have had a point). It wasn't that she didn't deeply, truly love him, or that she didn't know she loved him, it was that she ruthlessly weighed that love against the world she found herself in, and found it too dangerous to allow.
And while with many characters that might make me feel sorry for them, with Cora most of what I feel is more a stunned admiration for the sheer, impossible nerve of her, to rip out her own beating heart because she believed it made her too frail to survive. She's just ... She's strength personified, in one of its darkest and most terrible facets, and I madly adore her for it. There's pity there, because she is so terribly tragic, but mostly it's admiration.
Er. Whatever that may say about me.
Milah, though, yes, I do feel sorry for her. A lot. To a large extent, it wasn't Rumple's fault, I know it wasn't, but the situation after he came back from the Ogre Wars was basically poisonous for the both of them, and Bae as well really. I don't blame Milah at all for needing to escape, though I do blame her for the way she chose to go about it. I do realise, though, that she didn't have a lot of options either, given that this is 300 years in the Enchanted Forest's past and it's not good with women's rights now, let alone then, and given that she knew Rumple would never leave Bae, but the deception in letting him think Hook had stolen her to rape her was ... That was not her finest moment, not by a long shot. Still, though, she didn't deserve her end. I get why Rumple did it, and he wasn't exactly firing on all cylinders when it happened, but honey babe, she did nothing that was worth murder.
I think I would call Belle emotionally broken, if mostly because while she keeps trying to come back from it, the show never gives her more than maybe a day at a time to actually succeed before it does something else horrible to her. She may yet come back though, I'll give her that. Ruby and Snow, though, you have a point. Though Snow's being tested right now as well ...
Yes, this show is so messed up. It really, really is, but I adore it too, and will be waiting eagerly for the next episodes. Though, yes, while imminent doom will probably still happen, I am hoping they'll tone down the soap opera a little bit. I think we've already met most of the incredibly shitty parents available, so hopefully that will be the case?
They better not kill Neal, though. Rumple and Emma are most of my reasons for watching by this stage, and for the love of gods they need to catch a break, the pair of them. Also Charming. Him and Snow need one break, seriously, is that so much to ask?
Oi. This show plays with my emotions so much. And clumsily, too.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-20 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)Plus the Wicked Witch is being promoted all to hell as 'related to someone on the show.' So Henry, probably, although spoilers have her as Regina's twin sister, which makes me fear they've retconned Cora not bearing Rumple's children and makes me want to scream that humans can't do the whole "pregnant with two kids by two different fathers at the same time" thing that seems to imply happened. Which, if it happens anyway, can be handwaved with 'because magic, that's why.'
