I watch shows that are similar to the ones I love, but not as good, so that I can feel better about the ones I love.

This is why I enjoy seeing terrible GIFs. "There is at least one person out there who makes worse GIFs than me." *small cheer*

Yeah, I get that, too.

But then when I read my stuff from 10 years back I also cringe, so that's sobering.

...I assumed that literally everyone did this. No?

I think it's probably super common. Same thing as looking at bad art to feel better about your own. Also I look back at my old stuff to reassure myself that I've improved.

Yeah, I have a part-time business making jewellery, and I love looking at the horribly made stuff out there (though it makes me feel a bit guilty), and it also simultaneously worries me because some people are buying that stuff anyway, just like with badfic I suppose.

I don't. :(

I only started writing after I saw the movie 'The Island'. It had a really good premise, some great actors, and some of the worst dialogue I ever encountered. I thought even I could do better than that. Bad writing can be a great impetus.

I'd never even dare try if all I ever came in contact with were perfect movies or books. Too intimidating.

I think a lot of people do this, myself included.

Yeah, this. But it's strange -- I mean, surely there are better (technically)-written tropefic and idfic than the truly horrendous ones?

Or sometimes badfic is just entertaining in its horrificness?

I've had more honest enjoyment out of 'Immortal Beloved' or that Batman/Robocop by Comicsnix, both of which make breathing hard because of my tears of laughter, than the best written works ever.

Also 'How to Good-bye Depression: If You Constrict Anus 100 Times Everyday. Malarkey? or Effective Way?' which is one of the best books ever published, although not for any reasons of good writing.

It is hard to want to keep writing well sometimes when bad writing can be so good.

"summary: this is a fic where Clint boops Coulson on the nose and then they give each other butterfly kisses"

*holds you*

You should totally have that as a fic summary and start it off all sweet, but then rage ensues after the nose-bopping and it turns into the fic of how they break up. You would have to leave the internet. LOL

I do this, too. It really helps when I'm on a "my writing sucks" binge to pull up something truly terrible that beats those thoughts into submission.

Double-edged sword? Seeing those awful fics having so many more kudos/comments/reviews/faves/hits than your own works. :p
