Because there is no issue. You're trying to project backwards in time an issue that simply did not exist. And certainly did not exist in Lewis' mind, no matter how much you want to yell and scream and stamp your little feet that he was an evil neo-Nazi or something.

What about the real neo-Nazis, hmmm? What have you done to inform the world about the rise of the Golden Dawn in Greece? Or the "Right Sector" very openly neo-Nazi groups that are basically dismantling the Ukraine right now? Oh, no, it's far more productive of your time to take potshots at a children's book series written a long time ago, far far away, by a guy long dead.

People who practice actual social justice I am fine with. SJWs who sit on the sidelines and whine about safe non-issues (or create issues where there are'were none) really peeve me.

Who's calling him a neo-Nazi???

I could argue with the rest of this but you've probably heard it all before (about how people can do "actual social justice" and complain about representation in media at the same time and people are allowed to disagree about what's a real issue and what isn't, etc) and I don't really feel like typing it all out.

Mostly I'm just o.O at your Nazi tangent.

You're an idiot.

Okay, who even gives a shit about the author? No really, who gives a flying fuck? I don't. I really don't. It's all about me and my experience with the book.

To me, since I am reading it now in current times the racism that I see makes it harder to swallow, so to speak. It doesn't really matter when it was written. It's being read now. It may have been normal then but it's not now. Aren't I allowed to complain about it? I'm allowed to be uncomfortable by shit, you know.

I feel like you're making this a bigger issue than it is while also implying that all racism has to be of a certain level. Like, um, no. It's like sexism in the fact that there are microaggressions and old shit in books that were normal then but shitty now and even if it's not the worst thing in the world it still sucks. I'm not crusading to get the books removed from stores. Besides, most of us here are saying we fucking liked the books so I don't even see a problem here. It's a complaint, nothing more.

Also it's funny how we're apparently spending all our time and resources on hating some precious book. I'm not, by the way, I'm just eating popcorn right now. Literally. Like, it's sitting next to me. I got a new kind. It opens really fucking weird but it tastes... wait sorry. Off track. Anyway, I honestly doubt I have the resources to protest something in the Ukraine when I live on the other side of the planet. That takes a lot more than I can physically do. It also takes a large amount of time and commitment I don't currently have. Shit, I don't put any of that kind of effort or commitment into this book and it's in my house. This is literally what people in this secret's comments are doing right now:

"This sucks."

"Yeah."

...That's it. How is that... bad?

I like this comment and I'm also curious about your popcorn.

Thanks.

Um, Orville Redenbacher. Never had it before. It's good but the packaging is weird.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-21 07:05 am (UTC)(link)
Is it the new kind where the bag is also a bowl?

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2014-02-21 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess so 'cause the bag is a bowl. It's hard to keep the popcorn in when you open it but I liked that the sides were clear 'cause I got to watch the kernals pop.

I honestly doubt I have the resources to protest something in the Ukraine when I live on the other side of the planet.

And yet people from ALL OVER the planet are expected to care and actively protest issues in the US...

(Anonymous) 2014-02-21 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
They are? By whom?

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2014-02-21 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? Did I say that? No I fucking didn't. The only one saying it right now is you. Anyone with half a brain is not going to expect people who don't have the time, money, or resources to drop everything and protest something on the other side of the planet.

Get it together. You're all over the place.

Oh, no, it's far more productive of your time to take potshots at a children's book series written a long time ago, far far away, by a guy long dead.

It's Fandom Secrets, not Current Events Secrets, and this secret is about a particular children's book, so it's natural that people in the comments are going to be saying things about said children's book and not randomly mentioning other things. You have no idea what anyone commenting here thinks about other issues or what they are doing to about them. Caring about the Ukraine and having opinions on The Horse and His Boy are not mutually exclusive.

Racism didn't exist in the 1950s? Eh? It certainly did exist in Lewis' mind, though he wouldn't have thought of it that way. That's what "institutionalized racism" means.

As for your neo-Nazis rant... lol. "OMG you can't worry about that! Worry about MY issue instead!" Sorry, that is weak, and surely you know that.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-21 09:41 am (UTC)(link)
While I totally agree with the sentiment, this is really not the book to pick that fight about. Even I found it iffy before I really understood why.
