So, Fantastic Four casting... are they trolling?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-21 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
I like Michael B. Jordan (Johnny) and I think he's a good actor, so that's good. Kate Mara (Sue) is okay, I suppose, and I'm kind of interested in what their backstory is going to be (adoptive, half-sibs, foster, etc.). But Miles Teller (Reed) and Jamie Bell (Ben)? What? So, now Reed and Ben are the same age as Johnny and younger than Sue?

I really like Michael B Jordan and Kata Mara as casting choices, I don't care about the ages, and frankly, my standards and expectations for a Fantastic Four movie are so low as to be non-existent. I just can't get worked up about casting news for this in general. And like I say MJB and Kate Mara are really good.

The casting so far makes little sense to me, and I don't want Sue and Johnny to be adopted siblings, they could have made Sue black if they were really into the idea of Michael B. Jordon.

Probably an unpopular opinion but outside of Jessica Alba I liked the casting for the other movies. Or in the least I feel like the casting is not the reason those moves flopped.

To be fair, Kate Mara isn't that much older than the other three.

I was about to comment on how I was surprised at how young everyone was, before I remembered that my little brother was born in between Mara and the others and is about to turn 30, so these actors aren't exactly kids, and also Jessica Alba and Chris Evans were both younger when the 2005 Fantastic Four came out than any of these actors are now... so I feel old.

I don't know anything about any of these actors, so I'm assuming they are all fairly decent? I'm okay with Michael B. Jordan as Johnny, but like you, I'm wondering what their story is, because i'm pretty sure you HAVE to address characters that are siblings who appear to have different racial backgrounds, I mean, I wouldn't really believe this is like that Australian case of bi-racial parents having a white and black baby twins. Perhaps they won't be siblings in the movie? Also, Miles Teller looks like he could pull off Reed, if you gave him another decade to age.

All the actors are fairly well-regarded, but Michael B Jordan (mostly from his performance in Fruitvale Station but having been in The Wire can't hurt either) and Kate Mara (mostly from House of Cards) are particularly hot properties right now. Which may have been why they decided they weren't going to care about the dynamics of having siblings of different races.

I don't think they do HAVE to address it. For me, family is family, whether adopted, from a different mother or father, or found. If they're brother and sister, I don't need a qualifier.

AYRT

You're right, they could probably get away with not addressing it, and I do like stories where family is a relatively loose definition. That being said, I think that so many people would wonder about it that they may as well just say SOMETHING about it so that its over and done with.

That's a very progressive attitude but outside of a few thousand teenagers, most of the audience will take issue with it. The studio has already alienated the comics fans with the casting choices (most believe they are changing it so they are no longer siblings); they literally can't afford to alienate the average movie goer. Considering this is a reboot of a very recent franchise, the studio isn't off to a strong start.

I think your assumption on "outside a few thousand teenagers" is soft. I'm 31, and I know I'm not the only one my age who feels this way. Does that mean we're in the majority? No, but the world isn't as unenlightened as you seem to think.
