The way I read it, OP's statement was more about the glossy idol of Marilyn presented as the fiercest and most perfect icon of femininity that is the problem. I never really thought about it, but there is kind of a point toward painting her as a grand, romantic figure the be emulated when she was, in private, a deeply unhappy, troubled person for a lot of her life.

But then, really, no celebrity should be reduced to the glossy idol version of themselves. Because they're all complicated people.

I don't know, I'm not the only one picking up some sketchy implications from the last line. The "people are complicated" thing works both ways. It means you shouldn't look at someone solely as an icon because there's more to them than that, but it also means that there's more to them than the unsavory parts too. As someone else mentioned, she was passionate about equal rights for everyone and you could find worse people to base your politics on. That just doesn't mean that you should start using drugs like she did too.
