THIS. It really annoys me when people automatically equate an OC/FC with 'Sue/Stu'. Maybe sometimes, people have to create a character to fill a role/purpose that would otherwise shoehorn a canon character in an OOC role. Or maybe they want to experiment with part of the lore/expanded universe that's often otherwise overlooked/glossed over in canon. There is nothing wrong with that, imho.

Plus, there was a really great essay I'd read that basically said that 'Mary Sue' is a horribly gendered/sexist term, and yeah. I can't find it r/n, but it's on Tumblr, and it's really worth a read, imho.

Mary Sues are female, though, so of course it's a gendered term. "Gary Stu" exists as a term for male badly-written self inserts.

It seems like it's a lot easier for female characters to be called Mary Sues than it is for male characters to be called Gary Stus, though. There are many people who call any female character with agency whom they happen to not like a Mary Sue. And there are very, very obvious Gary Stus (*cough* Kvothe *cought*) that get treated like literary achievements.

I hate the term for that very reason. So sick of hearing it--there is just a ridiculous amount of scrutiny for female characters, canon or OC, that simply does not exist for male characters.
