Serious question

In terms of fictional characters/stories, we often make judgments/shout punishments that we wouldn't necessarily agree with in real life. Like, I hope everyone doesn't think real people deserve to get murdered, or raped, no matter how bad they are.

I know, "fiction doesn't exist in a vaccuum" or whatever that saying is. And I haven't seen this show. But if one hates a character and wants to see them "punished", schadenfreude and all, are we supposed to feel bad if a character gets raped, if we wouldn't feel bad if they were tortured/murdered?

For the record, I've never made this accusation since even characters I hate, I don't really like to see tortured/brutally assaulted/raped/whatever. Just honestly don't see much of a difference in what's okay to take glee in/see was deserved punishment if one is able to totally separate fiction from reality.

Personally, I cannot stand people who wish violence on a character they dislike, whether or not it's rape. It leaves me with a very strong sense of revulsion.

I have a bit of an odd perspective on this, though, because I'm into whump and h/c so I tend to love seeing characters I like being hurt. Doing that, and seeing other people do the same thing, doesn't bother me at all - it's just when it's done out of hatred that I recoil. Maybe because the whump and H/C is obviously a fantasy where we are meant to feel sorry for the characters, whereas wishing violence out of hatred feels more "real" and mean-spirited.... even though they're still fictional. I'm not wording this very well.
