Usenet fandom veterans?

How many of you were around when usenet was the main hub of internet fandom? Can you describe some of how it operated? How was it different from internet fandom today?

As far as I recall, usenet was never the main hub of internet fandom.

Well, there's two things that the word "fandom" means. There's the older, more traditional sense of science fiction and fantasy fans and the community around them, and there's the way it's used around here, referring specifically to the fic-based fangirl subsubculture.

The latter form of fandom has tended to prefer sub rosa spaces structured in such a way that nobody would wander in by accident and fanboys could be largely kept out. Thus, when I was a pretty well-known fan in a certain cult TV show fandom in the 90s, I remember the more "general" discussion going on via Usenet, but most of the fangirl-specific stuff, i.e. most fic and most squeeing over hot actors, taking place on mailing lists.

I don't know if that experience was the same in other fandoms, but it's what I observed in mine.
