For some people, the emotional payoff is not as good or intense if they already know that something's coming.

I enjoy being surprised but if I happen to see a spoiler then I also enjoy looking for clues before the big reveal that I heard about. So a story being ruined by a spoiler is something I just can't relate to. I'm not trying to say that it's stupid to hate spoilers (though I'm going to keep laughing at the overreactions in this thread) but personally I don't understand it.

AYRT

I can understand that.

I think it depends a little bit on how the narrative is structured. There are some things I've been spoiled for that I haven't minded, because the story progressed in such a way that the impact was the same regardless whether I knew what was coming or not. But there are a few cases where being spoiled sucked the life right out of a scene. To give an example, there was a TV show I watched over a decade ago where the network actually spoiled the season finale in the ads for it. The ads showed the main character lying on the ground, dying. In the episode, there's a short dream sequence before it's revealed that she's been shot, and it's supposed to trick you into thinking that there's a happy ending. Due to the ads, I was sitting there going, "but wait. What about her dying?" Totally ruined the effect.

...damn, that was rambly, sorry.

Don't be sorry, I think this is an interesting topic. I can see how even I might be disappointed in a case like that.
