Re: Is there anything you would like to get involved in?

I've always been meaning to do some kind of martial arts or self-defence course, since I think it's probably a useful thing to know (and also keeps you healthy!) But I don't know what's "best" or most reputable.

I'm also a small, petite woman, so my best chance in a fight is probably running in the other direction.

I've also always wanted to learn another language, like Chinese. And learn to play the piano.

I haven't done it myself but I know several women who have had a really good experience with aikido.

I can't help with the piano but that's something I've been wanting to learn too.

Are you in the United States? If so, you could look around and see if there's a United Studios of Self Defense in your area. I trained with them for two years and I felt safer and more confident than I ever had before. If I still lived in the US, I would still be doing it.

Either way, I suggested some sort of Mixed Martial Arts style--maybe it's just me, but I feel like the combination stuff is much more useful for self-defense. The few times I tried singular styles ("just" karate, etc.) I felt they were too constricting. Maybe I just didn't stick with them long enough, but yeah.

As mentioned above, Aikido is also good.

Years ago when I took a self-defense class, the emphasis was not on ~winning at hand-to-hand combat; it was on distracting/disabling/slowing down a potential attacker long enough that you can get away. (And secondarily on driving home the message that you do not have to be nice or worry about the feefees of someone who is acting threatening toward you.) So yes, a good self-defense instructor will encourage you to run like hell in the opposite direction as soon as you can.
