For some reason, I think Hook was the tipping point regarding OUAT villains for some people? Rumple & Regina had a full extra season's worth of build-up, and had the advantage of having been the first two to receive the OUAT 'tragic but redeemable' treatment. Then there was Cora, who was awesome and evil and tragic and stunning, and in S3 Malcolm who was just a shithead you were perfectly okay with hating, neither of which required either redemption or love interests.

But Hook, in the middle, seems to be somewhat polarising. After having already had it happen with Rumple & Regina, the whole 'redeeming the vicious sleazeball' plot seems to be wearing thin, and while his romance with Emma works for (apparently quite a lot of) people, it's also really annoying quite a few others for various reasons (mostly relating to Neal, Rumple and Emma's track record with having dated shits and paid for it, I think).

He seems to be sort of stuck right at the point where several show trends and several ship wars/character allegiances collide, and I think it's dividing opinions quite sharply around him.

OP of Hook-hate thread here--for me, it wasn't so much that the writers pulled the whole tragic backstory=redemption thing one too many times, as that Hook didn't feel like a fairy tale villain to me, and I don't like revenge quests.

I don't have to worry that someone can rip my heart out of my chest with their bare hands and puppet me with it. I don't have to worry that if I piss of my landlord he'll turn me into a snail and stomp on me. I've run into multiple Hooks, though. People who treat those they see as weaker than them like shit, who mock anyone who can't or won't fight back, whose flirtation is flirting from one angle and rape-laden innuendo from another, who don't understand the concept of loyalty except as something to fake for as long as it takes them to get what they want. His redemption arc isn't working for me because in my experience people who pull that kind of shit in real life aren't redeemable. I'm 99% certain the writers mean Hook's redemption to be sincere, but I keep waiting for the double-cross, because in real life someone who did what Hook did in season 2 wouldn't understand doing the right thing for its own sake. His only positive trait was his willingness to sacrifice himself for Milah, but after she died he was willing to hurt multiple women simply because they got in his way, so so much for that. Season 3 Hook so far seems like a completely different person, and I can't reconcile the revenge-obsessed creep from season 2 with the lovelorn swain of this season.

I forgive Rumpelstiltskin the most out of all the villains because his horrible, destructive manipulation of a ton of innocent people at least had a sort of positive end goal of reuniting with and apologizing to his son, and turning people into critters and shrubbery and ripping out hearts and casting curses aren't something I have to worry about in real life. Plus he acknowledges that he's a monster who's done terrible things. He doesn't expect forgiveness, he expects condemnation. I'd like him better if he'd stop doing awful shit because it's awful instead of only because Neal or Belle asks, but maybe someday he won't need morality training wheels.

Regina's motivations were totally selfish and her raping the Huntsman and the way she treated children, including Henry, creep me out, but she looks to finally be putting at least Henry's well-being ahead of her own, which is a nice change from, say, threatening to kill everyone he's ever known so all he'll have left is her and then mindwiping him when he protests. It wasn't so much the heart-ripping and stuff that bugged me as the rape, taking kids from their parents/killing kids, treating her own kid like shit, and generally thinking of herself as a victim, but hopefully since the writers have a new villain in mind for the next half of the season, they'll take her off the morality see-saw and her redemption will stick.

I don't really ship Emma with anyone, but since the writers seem determined to pair her up with someone, if I had to pick a ship for her it'd be Swanfire, followed very distantly by Swan Queen--after Regina's been in therapy for five or so years, maybe. Honestly, I'd rather see Emma, Neal, and Regina just trying to all parent Henry without killing each other and maybe becoming reluctant friends, rather than sleeping together in any combination. And considering the already Jerry Springer worthy family relationships, those three plus Hook is one love-quadrangle where an OT4 or OT3 is not a workable solution, no matter how attractive all of them are.

I think I agree with pretty much all of this. I've run into a few Hooks as well, which is maybe why every time he goes near Emma with the whole 'I never thought I could love again until you' routine, I keep mentally half-screaming at her that she knows this line, she's got to have heard this line before, please don't fall for it. You've watched him shoot a woman for loving the wrong man and kidnap innocent people for the sake of vengeance, please tell me you're paranoid enough after all you've seen that you're not falling for this.

And I know, I know, the show probably does mean him to be sincere, but I still keep panicking every time he goes near her. Because it would fit with his S2 character, even if he is actually attracted to her and thinks he loves her, for him to also be doing this to have won over Neal/Rumple all over again. It could still be part of his vengeance, even if he himself may not consciously realise that, it could still be that knowing she loved Neal and had his child makes the 'victory' all the sweeter, and that just ...

Plus, she doesn't have her memory anymore. She doesn't remember what he's done anymore, and the first thing he did was try to kiss her. And she kneed him somewhere painful in response, yes, but if he starts wooing her, if she does the whole 'fall in love with the mysterious stranger who says he loves her' thing while she doesn't remember who he is, I'm going to scream.

I think I'm probably a little irrational about this pairing, I know. The show is probably trying to be sincere about it, a genuine love on his part, but it still just creeps me out and I can't handle it.

I want Emma to find love, yes, I want her to find someone to be happy with, but I would really, really prefer if she could do that with someone who DOESN'T have all this creepy backstory with her. In all the relationships she's had on the show, her and Graham are still the healthiest-looking of her options, although I liked how Neal stepped back a bit and let her come to him if she still wanted to. Her, Regina and Neal parenting Henry is still my favourite of her relationships, but not really in the romantic sense so much as the familial, though I mightn't be adverse to an OT3 a few years down the line when everybody's stabilised a lot.

I just ... really need Emma not to be hurt anymore. I need that to happen. And Hook is ... so not the right set of vibes/backstory for me to think he'll provide that.
