Am I the only one who kind of prefers so-so fic authors...

...to really-good-but-for-that-one-thing authors?

I've noticed this a couple of times in the last week. There's this author whose fic I have read in several different fandoms. She writes the kind of plots I like, the pairings I like, her stuff is engaging and fun and long... and she has this one writing tic that crops up in every fic of hers I've ever read, and since I noticed it I spend more time waiting for the next instance of it than enjoying the fic itself! I read one of her stories in my newest fandom, abandoned it halfway through, and have not bothered with the rest of them.

And I've been trying to read one of the more popular kinky series in the same fandom for about three weeks (and it's definitely my kink) but the dialogue is just pat enough that it's like sand in my brain. When the author isn't as good, I don't seem to care at all, but if I really like your writing you'd better be fucking aces at it or I'll seethe while reading. It's dumb but I can't seem to stop.

Well, I have lower standards for fic than for published books. And if it's smut it really just has to be hot. What's the tic? You got me curious.

I don't actually know what the problem is or I'd have told her, it bugs me so much! She misuses the words hadn't and haven't, and I don't mean she mixes them up. She uses them where she shouldn't, in ways she shouldn't.

I feel like that a lot. Like, when a story is so good that my expectations soar through the roof, all it takes is one little thing to pop my bubble and ruin the entire damn story for good. Whereas if it's just a little better than mediocre, I can be more forgiving of slights and enjoy it more. I have soooo many examples of stories that are on my Fuck You Imma Run Away Crying Hysterically list because I loved them so much and that love made them able to disappoint me so badly.

Can't say that I prefer the mediocre authors, but I've noticed that I pay more attention to the mistakes of better authors. With the mediocre authors the individual annoyances drown in the sea of annoyances, so it all becomes just background noise, but with the better authors the tropes, words, etc. that I don't like tend to stand out more.
