The good part about knitting a scarf is that it is dead simple and EXTREMELY hard to screw up badly enough that the whole project is ruined. You've got one stitch, it can be done on nice thick straight needles, and it doesn't really matter if you drop or add a stitch on accident.

My problem with scarves is when I realize that I essentially have to knit a piece of cloth that's five feet long by however wide. I usually got about two feet in before saying "this is the most boring shit ever, why am I doing this" and starting something more interesting. This is why my last 5 projects have either been mittens, baby hats, normal person hats, or small stuffed animals and yet I have never finished a scarf. If you're planning on mostly knitting while watching TV, scarves may be your speed as you won't have to look at the needles much once you get the hang of it, and the boredom will be less of a problem.

Also, if sewing is bigger where you are, have you considered needlepoint? I was heavily into that during my teens, and there are kits that are largely self-contained, portable, and often quite nice looking. The instructions also tend to be clear and understandable.
