Sorry, I can only address the books not really the show,,,
(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 04:22 am (UTC)(link)Take Ned for instance. Pitiable, maybe. Heartbreaking, even. But sympathetic? Relatable? No: there is too much we do not know about him and his back story -and his sister's- to be able to truly understand him.
But what we do know for sure is that the extent to which he doesn't see what is going on right in front of his eyes is deliberate blindness to both Jon's and his own wife's anguish. And the likely result of it, even if things had not exploded as they did would have destroyed Jon or at the very least warped him irreparably.
And say, Brienne? She is just so... stupid (again, it's better if I do not explain what I mean by it as it would contain too many spoilers, but). Her physical strength apparently mandates a corresponding stupidity? Argh.
And as for Bran, my tolerance for spoiled kids has never been very high and... well, maybe you'll see later what I mean, but let's just say that I am not impressed by the way his character turns out.
Don't get me wrong, I like G.R.R. Martin's books in general, but these are a really bad example of what he can write when not writing a genre parody. All of his other books show that he is a master at writing great (though not necessarily heroic) characters. But likable heroes is not what this saga is about, by his own admission.
Note: I am sure the show cleaned up and whitewashed a lot the characters a la 'No, no, Han Solo did not shoot first but only defended himself', but even so, I don't suppose any of the main characters are that different from the source material.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)Brienne isn't stupid, she's emotionally fragile. She has feelings she's never learned to deal with -- she falls in love with handsome heroes like the young girl she never got the chance to be, she feels maternal towards the children she'll never have. These feelings inform her decisions.
And Bran... Bran does nothing wrong in book 5. What happens to him is not the result of any character flaw.
