Weird medical issue (not gross, I think?)

(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
Okay guys, I'm not sure what to do here. So I hope someone here has had this happen to them so they can help me clue in on what's going on.

Thursday two weeks ago, I woke up and the area behind my ear was swollen. Not that spot low behind the ear in the fleshy bit that swells into a knot, I know that's a lymph node. It's this...crescent-ish shaped area that just swelled up and went numb. I thought it was just a weird thing and ignored it but it didn't go away a week later. It got smaller and less noticeable and less numb, but it's still swollen.

So I went to a small doctor's office type thing they have here where a nurse practitioner sees you. She saw that the area was swollen and couldn't find any bug bites and it wasn't discolored, but she did see fluid behind my ear drum so she gave me a week's worth of amoxicillin (or however it's spelled). I took it faithfully and I currently have two days of pills left.

However, it doesn't seem to be getting better. I have a doctor but nobody around here, including my doctor, will do walk-ins. I have to go to an urgent care place and spend way more than my copay and I don't have the budget for that right now. So, here's what I've noticed:

- the swelling is much less in the morning when I wake up and gets progressively worse during the day
- the swollen area will move from sitting at the top of my ear and slightly swelling the top of my ear lobe to sitting behind where the lobe turns downward
- it's still a little numb
- I can feel fluid in there if I knock my head against something lightly, like the back of the sofa
- it doesn't really hurt anymore, but it used to. I've never had a fever.

So...is this just an allergic reaction, or really a soft tissue infection and for some reason the high powered penicillin isn't working? Has this happened to someone else? I've had it for two weeks and it's both worrying and irritating me.

That sounds really weird. If it won't take you too long to get an appointment, you should get it looked at again. Maybe by a dermatologist? I really don't know...hopefully someone else will see this...

Sounds like a cyst? You can get them in your skin and stuff. As far as I know they're mostly harmless but I'm really not an expert on them.

For example, I get cysts in my boobs. They shrink and grow according to where I am in my cycle. They're full of fluid but harmless. However, there are a lot of kinds of cysts.

The pain and numbness, though, is worrisome even though it isn't hurting anymore. I've never had that nor heard of it. (Edited: Looked them up and apparently pain can happen with quite a few of them but I've found no mention of numbness.)

Really, you ought to go back to your doctor or nurse practitioner with the details you've provided us. That would be your best and safest bet. I'm just a weirdo on the internet. What do I know?

...before this I didn't even know they could appear on your vagina.

I have no idea what it is, but I once had what felt like a very firm swelling on one side of my neck that my doctor said was nothing and it promptly went away, and earlier a bump on my hand that came and went and caused a lot of pain that turned out to be a ganglion cyst, which is harmless and only hurt for me because mine happened to be in a position to put pressure on some nerves. There are benign things like this that can happen and it seems to be that, at the very least, fluid-filled =/= cancer, so there's that.

Make an appointment with your doctor, even if it will be a little while before you can go in. It seems like the only alternative is to wait for it to go away, but what if two weeks from now it still hasn't gone away? You could have seen your doctor (or some other doctor) by that point if you'd started the process if making the appointment now. Maybe it will go away and you can cancel the appointment. Maybe your doc will say it's nothing and you're out your copay but you have your peace of mind. Maybe it is a problem and you'll be able to get it treated without having let it get too advanced.
