Re: the tumblr author's rebuttal

The author is assuming that it would mean the exact same thing in pre-Islamic Arabia as it means now in the West, and it wouldn't. If Jasmine had actually been born as a male, then she would not be considered to be female; she would not have the same restrictions or social expectations as someone who was born female (and yet would also not have all of the same freedoms as people who were fully male); and she would not have been able to take means to completely pass as a woman (she would have to dress in a manner that was "intermediate" between male and female). It's also very unlikely that she would be allowed to assume this identity as a member of the royal family.
So, why is the author wrong? Because in trying to make a point about gender and trans* identity, she shits all over the cultural context. Granted, it's a Disney film, and definitely get a lot wrong when it comes to cultural context, but I don't see how exacerbating that helps anyone.
