It's actually fairly realistic. A lot of real life poor people who win a large sum of money have no experience dealing with such a huge amount of it and generally don't know how to manage it, so they end up spending a lot of it very quickly.

True. If people never have enough money to do any saving or long-term planning, they do not think about the future when they finally get it. They just want to spend it while they can.

I was gonna say this.

It's really heartbreaking to see sometimes, actually. I had some clients at my old job who got a bit of money in a settlement, and despite it not being that much, they thought they had become rich and started living like it. They blew through the money in less than a month. :(

Plus there's the realization that, if they don't use that money to splurge on something fun and frivolous now, it's going to get slowly chipped away by little necessities and unexpected emergencies and pretty soon it'll be like it was never there. So there's the feeling that they may as well spend it before it evaporates.

I saw exactly this happen with my Dad not long ago. He had big ideas about investing in stuff and setting himself up for his old age... the problem is he favours get-rich-quick schemes over calmer, surer plans every time.
