I never got why a trip to Egypt is so expensive when you've got portkeys and floo powder and apparation and all that. Okay, so you can argue that Egypt's not in Britain's floo network and the kids are underage, but I still think portkeys would've been a valid option. Even if you had to chain them from like London to Paris to Rome to Cairo or something because of distance issues.

Still a lot less expensive than 9 round trip plane tickets, which would normally be the biggest part of a regular budget.

Isn't there a safety risk depending on how far away it might be, or was that just for Apparation.

Pretty sure the safety risk was for apparation. Honestly not sure about portkeys though.

It is a bit hard speculating about distance stuff, since not a single scene in the series took place outside of Great Britain.

Maybe it costs money to set up a long distance portkey/floo? Like, with agents (wizarding travel agency?) setting it up on both ends? Or maybe they took a boat? They couldn't exactly take brooms, I don't think, statute of secrecy and all that.
