I'm worried about this one, too, but less due to the book and more due to the mythology behind it. In particular, I'm nervous about them making the tree sequence into a Christian thing. It would be really easy for them to do and would require less exposition than keeping the link to the Norse myths.

I disagree with you about Stardust, though. I love, love, love that movie and can forgive all of the differences between it and the book. Robert de Niro's performance alone makes it all worth it.

It would require less exposition maybe but it would also make much less sense with the basic plot of the book. When two of your main characters are Loki and Odin, I think it's safe to say you're going to have to do some exposition about Norse myth.

Honestly, I think it'd be impossible to make the tree anything other than it is. They could water it down, or play up one aspect at the expense of another, but it's still an Ash tree. Even if you try to Christify the heck out of it, it's still Baldr on Ygdrassil.
