I'm something of an awkward introvert in meatspace and that kind of social misfire is more likely than not to happen to me when dealing with strangers. Maybe they'll be perfectly nice and fun to hang out with, but I see no reason to take that chance when there's nice people right here online that I don't have to be in the same room with.

Same. I met up with a local fanfic writer once for lunch at a local diner. Beforehand I had visions of chatting about writing and fandom in general with a kindred spirit, but all she wanted to talk about was her OTP Picard/Riddick. That, and the food supplements she'd have to take after the meal we were eating.
