It's like that episode of House where House is berating a guy at the free clinic for having an iPod but no health insurance. I wanted to grab him by the shoulders and yell "Dude! Having health insurance is like buying a new iPod EVERY MONTH." If you have $20 left over at the end of each month, you can save up to buy an iPod within a year and it should last you at least several years. That $20 a month isn't going to be enough to cover major monthly expenses that you can't afford already, like rent or insurance.
