Funny--critics like to jump on anything they can possibly interpret as homoerotic, but I've never seen them read this as such. (Mostly they argue over whether Kafka was predicting genocide of Jews.)

There is nothing homoerotic or even remotely sexualised about The Penal Colony, and that's part of what makes it so hot.

This is one of my fav short stories... I didn't find it hot though, just disturbing. Still, it's really, really good.

I reread this a while ago for Yuletide reasons, and it occurred to me as I was reading that the world is very large and there were probably people out there who considered Kafka a one-handed read.
