Provide an example?

Legend of Zelda, Doom, Silent Hill, Bioshock

You can play the most recent in the series without having played the others but you are not allowed in fandom unless you know everything about every game.

As a member of the Doom community, you are wrong on at least that one. And re-reading the secret, I seem to have completely misread it.

So, OP: Don't fucking worry about the fandom, just play the games. I still like Thief and Fallout despite most of the fandoms for both being completely batshit.

I've seen you make derisive comments here about people not knowing some of the history about Doom and that you're an expert, so it comes off as unwelcoming even if you don't mean it to. Also, you personally may be accepting of fans who don't know everything, but that doesn't mean the fandom at large is. It could also depend on where you go for fandom.

Okay hold up, hold up, okay? That was ONE TIME, the person doing it was an OBVIOUS TROLL trying to tell me I didn't know jackshit about Doom's history (I was talking about the game's history for its' 20th anniversary) and when I asked them to prove it they made stuff up that was easily refuted. Okay?

And yes, the Doom community has its snarky, unwelcoming parts, but the community at large is very friendly and open. Admittedly, it was different about ten years ago.

My question is... if you enjoyed one installation of a series, why wouldn't you be interested in at least checking out the others? I came into Silent Hill late in the game (3 was my first one), but since I liked it so much, I went out and got the first two games so that I could play those too.

Same with Bioshock. Played Infinite and liked it, so I picked up the original Bioshock and am planning on getting 2 also.

People who like one game in a series probably are interested in checking out the others. But video games are time-consuming, and it's totally reasonable to want to check into the fandom while playing the others. Fans can get...hostile when you're not completely in the know.

Why does it matter? Is it a problem if someone just enjoys one particular game?

Late to the party but; not for me. I'm generally quite content to enjoy one game out of a series without feeling the need to play the rest. i.e Silent Hill ;) It's probably about 70/30 with 70% no interest in the rest of the series it's just that I can absolutely love a specific game to bits yet have absolutely no interest in the rest of the series.

Same deal for movies, books, comics.
