Yeah :D I feel like I could even buy into a speculation of this sort if not for Doyle's wives and for the fact that I'm pretty sure he never intended for H&W to be gay (though his views in this regard were admirable, as the Roger Casement affair shows).

I actually think that the creation of the character of Holmes had a lot to do with the relationship between Bell and Doyle. ACD probably did have something of a non-romantic crush on Bell, especially considering the fact that the latter must have looked like a great father figure. With Doyle's father committed to an asylum and incapable of serving as a role model, viewing Bell as one must have been tempting.

And Doyle did write that "for some reason which I have never understood he singled me out from the drove of students who frequented his wards and made me his outpatient clerk". I can never get over the fact that he still had no idea why Bell would "single him out".
