Named after Scrappy Doo

Basically, it's the character who's almost universally hated by the fandom, but inexplicably loved by the creators and the characters. For example, Wesley Crusher from Star Trek, Ashley Seaver in Criminal Minds, Adric from Doctor Who, and Will Schuester from Glee are written as people who should capture the audience's sympathy, but instead we just come up with creative ways we want them to die. Characters like Umbridge wouldn't be an example because she was designed to be hated. This is a character who was created to be loved (for example, actual Mary Sues/Gary Stus by inexperienced writers) but ends up evoking the opposite emotion.

This got way longer than I thought it would.

Really good explanation. Characters like that are a headache.

I always like the characters no one else likes...

That's why I said "almost universally hated." It makes me sound vague and unsure, but most of the time, using an absolute would make a statement false.

I thought those were Wesleys, and Scrappys are basically Wesleys but with more emphasis on being there to be cute than the creator's personal love.
