I'm going to Washington DC end of next month!

[personal profile] badass_tiger 2014-02-25 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
My mum wants me to make travel plans. So suggest things for me! I'm already going to the Smithsonian with a friend, but other than that, we don't know where to go. My mum's a big fan of the show Eat Street so she wants me to find vegetarian/halal vendors and shops we can go to. And the two of us, being teachers, want to go and see a Muslim school over there, anyone know a place like that? Preferably a preschool/primary school, but older is fine. Oh and of course we want to see the mosques.

So, f!s, where would you recommend two lovely Muslim women who love cheap shopping and seeing the sights to go in DC? Most importantly: where are the good places to eat?

One of my favorite places to eat is Amsterdam Falafelshop. It's in Adams Morgan, on 18th Street near the corner of Mintwood Place. There's a lot of excellent places to eat in Adams Morgan, but I have a big soft spot for those falafels. Best way to reach it is by taking a walk from the Woodly Park/Adams Morgan metro stop on the Red Line -- it's a bit of a walk, over the bridge and through the neightborhood, but real atmospheric and scenic. If you don't want to walk, you can take the DC Circulator shuttle through Adams Morgan from the same metro station -- costs one dollar.

I love the National Archives. Every American should go see those.

The National Gallery of Art is good too.

I always ate on the cheap so I can't help you with the rest of it. Sorry. :(

Oh that's okay, we eat cheap too! Just as long as it does have things we can eat. Especially in non-Muslim countries we cannot exactly be picky about what to eat lest that halal shop is the only one in its area. So any recs would be fine!

Last time I was in DC I went to Pain Quotidien at 2000 P St Washington. IIRC it's a coffee shop but I thiiiiiiiiiiink there are a couple of Muslim restaurants nearby.

I remember that they serve fresh fruit.

The National Archives are brilliant. And the Navy Memorial. Actually, the entirety of Penn Quarter is mind-blowingly gorgeous at night, with all the marble buildings around and the Capitol up above. Also, which of the Smithsonian museums are you going to? There's several. My favorites are Air & Space and Natural History, although American History is pretty great too.

The Newseum is also great. It's right near the Archives too. However, I think it's about $20 to get in, so your choice.

Eating: Adams Morgan. Just Adams Morgan. About a hundred great really ethnically diverse restaurants there, lots of them with plenty of vegetarian food.

I think we'll be going to Air & Space and the Postal Museum, but if not the Postal we'll go to Natural History. My friend and I are still talking about that because I really want to go to the Postal Museum but I know I'm the only one who'll find it interesting u_u

Oh man, I went there for an east coast trip for school. It was a lot of fun. Unfortunately, I couldn't give you any advice other than things like, "Check out the National Mall." I really did like the Lincoln Memorial, for example. I'm sure you already have that down or have been there before.

I'm not much help other than that. Best of luck on your trip!

I mean it when I say we have no idea where to go. America has always been as mythical and mysterious to us as Narnia. The only idea of what surprises it may hold for us come from the trusty television. What's the Lincoln Memorial? Just a historical monument?

Re: I'm going to Washington DC end of next month!

(Anonymous) 2014-02-25 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's a monument to President Lincoln, and it's just very impressive and striking and monumental - large, classical building built like a Greek temple, in front of a long reflecting pool, across from the Washington Monument, with a sculpture of Lincoln inside. Martin Luther King gave his "I Have A Dream" speech from the steps outside it during the Civil Rights movement. Just very historical and impressive, IMO at least.

Yeah, what the anon said. Also, seeing the monuments was a lot of fun for me.

Mmmm, I should say that the National Mall isn't a mall. It's where a lot of monuments are. DC is, like, the place for monuments in America. I had never seen so many monuments in my life than when I was there.

So, yeah, if you're really new to it all it wouldn't hurt to pick up a few travel brochures. They generally list all the nice touristy places.

I went to DC on a summer choir trip... i had a good time, but my memory sucks I think we hit all the normal tourist things there, what I really remember is white marble, sunshine, and the pain. Make sure you have good sunglasses. There was also a dead duck in the refection pond in front of the Washington memorial.

There is a beautiful mosque down on Massachusetts Avenue not too far away from Dupont Circle. I forget the name of it, but you can't miss it if you go by it. It's very lovely.

The Dupont Circle area is also great for food, but if you want vendors like food trucks, I'd recommend checking out Farragut Square around noon during the week. They are EVERYWHERE there, and there's a huge variety of food to choose from. I know there are vegetarian/halal trucks around!

By then the weather should be nice enough that going to the zoo won't be unpleasant, either.

Food is actually pretty tricky in DC, I'll be honest. I ended up in Chinatown and found a nice bar there that we enjoyed. On a side note to that, when we were in Chicago, I walked into a random Marriott and just asked the concierge desk for a list of recommendations where to eat and they had a whole printed list in the neighborhood with phone numbers, addresses, and types of food. They did the same thing for us at the hotel in DC, so check with your hotel.

I have been to DC a million times and love it! I really love the Zoo, but it's a lot of walking. My favorites of the Smithsonian museums are American History and Air&Space. If the weather is nice, walk around the memorials at night, the whole area is all lit up and you can still walk around them. I enjoyed the tour of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, it was neat to see money being made.

Feel free to ask more questions! My favorite time of year to go is during the Cherry Blossom festival, but it's super crowded.

I really enjoyed the International Spy Museum when I was in DC. It's about $10 to get in, but very worth it.

So this is a few days late but maybe you get email alerts or something...

If you're here in a month you might be in time for cherry blossoms - which means you MUST go to the Mall and see them. The trees are exquisite.

The mosque on Massachusetts Ave. mentioned by another person is the Islamic Center, and is absolutely beautiful. They do a lot of community outreach so they're probably your best bet for finding other mosques, Muslim schools, etc. If you go, go early (or stay late) and walk up and down Mass Ave to look at the embassies.

Things to do: whatever your interest, there's a Smithsonian museum for it. Culture is really affordable - most things with the word "national" in front of their names (incl. all the Smithsonians) are free. My personal faves are the National Gallery and Natural History Museum. The zoo is another nice place, but if you plan on seeing the pandas go as soon as they open because everyone and their five screaming children will be heading there as well. Music/poetry/readings tend to happen in bars, so if you're OK with being around alcohol go to Shaw or Columbia Heights and see who's doing what.

Schools: depending on what country you're from this may be an issue (the President's kids attend it), but Sidwell Friends is well worth touring. It's a Quaker cradle-to-college school that has (IMO at least) an interesting educational philosophy. I went there during a grad-school program on school design and enjoyed it. Contact them ahead of time to talk about touring, they let people in fairly regularly.

Food: I don't know about halal, but there's vegetarian food all over Dupont Circle, Adams Morgan, and Tenleytown. For reference: Sidwell Friends is near Tenleytown, the Islamic Center is near Dupont, and Adams Morgan is in between the two. Southeast of all of these is the Mall, where you'll find the museums, cherry trees, and monuments. Shaw and Columbia Heights are north of the Mall and east of Adams Morgan. If you like tea, check out Teaism - they've got a few locations (Penn Quarter is the best), great tea and delicious veg food.

Transportation: DO NOT RENT A CAR. Everything worth seeing in DC is accessible by public transport. I assume you're flying in from Dulles? You'll need to cab it to the city (grrrr Silver Line needs to get built already) but once you're in it's walkable and easy.

Shopping: most things are expensive-for-Americans here, but we have some great secondhand shops. The number of transient politicos and rich people here means that we have stores full of (relatively) inexpensive gently used designer stuff.

Enjoy your trip!
