I'm sort of baffled how this could happen cash or no without the blessing of the BBC.

Aren't the audios unofficial as well?

The audios cooperate with the BBC though. The Beeb gets to decide what aliens, characters and plot points can be in an audio episode. Even how scary or violent thecan be. Developement of canon characters has to be greenlit by the beeb. (e.g. when the new show was out the audios weren't allowed to do anything with the Master for a couple of years). The audios may not be produced by the beeb, but they are subject to contro lby it.And they're licensed.

Nope. Big Finish is licenced by the BBC and the companions 8 mentioned in his minisode Night of the Doctor are canon. (Well as much as Doctor Who observes canon at any rate.)

I'm pretty sure Big Finish has always had some sort of licensing agreement.
