Well, hell and all, it's not ridiculous to anyone who's ever watched sports in any capacity. Of course these things take on meaning to us out of all proportion to their real importance. That is I think to a large extent the whole point of sports. We form an attachment to the players on the field, and we give meaning to their performances - they represent something greater than simply a series of actions on a field of grass or on ice, more than a meaningless competition - some aesthetic or moral quality, something serious and real. Anyone who's ever followed sports can understand how you feel and anyone who can't I don't have any damn time for. Whatever moment or sport or athlete it might be.
