WTF google....

[personal profile] tabaqui 2014-02-25 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
I'm looking online for an image (just random), and i'm searching 'march hare'. Well of course, i'm inundated with Disney and Alice in Wonderland stuff. So i do the -disney -Alice thing to weed them out and....i get *more*.

WTF? Am i doing it wrong? Do i have some setting borked? Usually that *works*.
*is frustrated*

Maybe try putting the -'d terms in quotations?

I shall do that....

I got less, but Disney is still the first thing it comes up with. So annoying.

What exactly are you looking for?

I know there's a saying that's been around a long time, but Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is where the famous character comes from. Or do you just not want anything Disney?

I just want a march hare. That's been around a lot longer than Carroll. As far back as 1540 - probably much longer - people believed that hares went 'mad' in march. I just wanted some kind of neat hare image, not that goofy one from Disney.

Try googling "hares fighting" or "boxing hares"--maybe "boxing hares March."

I googled "hares fighting March" and one of the images was this:

Even more omg that I just found:

http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v309/n5968/abs/309549a0.html

It turns out that the "boxing" which ethologists had assumed was male-male competition for females is actually females who don't want to copulate fending off males who do.

HA. Shocking. Yet more assumptions being made on the part of scientists that utterly exclude the female of the species.

(Just read something else along those lines about...mummies? or viking burial sites that they realized were sometimes female....)

Finally, we discuss why misleading statements about hare behaviour have remained unchallenged for centuries.

GEE I wonder.

Thank you for teaching me something new, anon.
