sadly, since OP is from the US, they could easily have gotten through college and graduated before ever actually having set foot in front of a classroom. I've seen this happen a LOT; people think they want to teach, get their degree, and then end up having no aptitude for it, or hating various parts of it to the point that it ruins the job.

to the OP, if you've only ever worked in public school, you might try non-traditional school and see if it makes a difference. I HATED working in public school but I love working in a Montessori school. Granted, I made way more money in public schools... but I also sometimes imagined driving myself off the road into the river on my morning commute when I was headed to the public school.

I was going to suggest Montessori school myself! I went as a kid and loved it.

My principal memory of Montessory is the teachers who looked the other way when one of the children went around the classroom punching people, but solemnly called my mom in for a conference because I liked to use the oval shape template to draw ducks.
