My mother was a teacher. Listening to her stories convinced me never to go that route.

When I lived in VA there was a really cool little store that sold vintage stuff. It was super-girly, all Jane Austen, floral prints, lace you get the idea. The lady who owned it used to be a teacher, quit, and opened a store that was literally full of her favorite kinds of stuff. Super, super girly.

Moral of the story: open your own business based on stuff you like.

+2 for family that were teaches. Both my mother and grandmother. My grandmother's exact words were "honey, there is no worse job in the world than being a teacher". Both ended up working as social workers (mostly with settling people who just arrived in the country) and were way happier with it.

I just managed to dodge that bullet. I was on an English major track in junior college and right before I was going to transfer to a four-year, I realized I was the only person in my class who had no intention of teaching (I'd gone in with a vague idea about doing editing), and was on track to do just that.

Also I realized that I hated English Literature as a subject (I realized in my second-to-last semester that I should have chosen History, but that also only leads to teaching, most of the time). So I was left with a bunch of useless credits and an anxiety disorder, and I've been "taking time off" since.

I honestly don't know why I felt the need to say all that.
