(Anonymous) 2014-02-25 02:33 am (UTC)(link)Because they believed their own bullshit, and completely nonsensical fabrications. For example, one of them got it in their head I have PTSD and must be an abuse victim. Another one even called in my mother to talk about whether she had a "normal" pregnancy. Another one thought that me reading superhero comics was a problem. PTSD guy also thought my not being interested in a relationship at 19 was not normal. Seriously, I WISH I was making this shit up, but I couldn't if I tried.
Clearly, I'm not going to convince you. But in my experience I encountered more harmful people than helpful ones, and while I might just have an unusually shitty experience, I simply do not believe my experience would be an isolated incident. The only thing that therapy did for me was waste my time, and my parents' money.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-25 02:56 am (UTC)(link)Him asking "really?" incredulously and asking more questions because he apparently thought I was lying, and constantly fishing for traumatic events in my childhood that never happened.
"this is a completely standard part of a psychiatric diagnostic interview"
If you say so.
"again, what did you say to dissuade them of these notions once they presented them to you?"
Why should I dissuade them in the first place? These are not even particularly strange matters. I don't particularly need a reason for either except "I like comics" and "not interested in a relationship". Comics guy dropped it, but relationship/PTSD guy kept asking about it.
Also the bigger problem is that all these inane theories actually removed me further from working through the real issues.
"is not going to convince a person who has been in two different mental hospitals and has worked at a mental hospital for the last two years"
Well then there's no point arguing with you. I stand by my point, disagreeing with you, as I'm sure you surely will, too.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-25 03:21 am (UTC)(link)And nope, didn't go in thinking all psychiatrists are idiots. Went out thinking that.
I was there for several reasons. Initially, yes, because my parents made me. Later because I saw it as a means to get out of a toxic school environment. Even later because I genuinely wanted to get better because I wanted to be able to go to college without crawling under tables from anxiety.
But all in all, for whatever reason I went, I never felt they were even moderately helpful (and some even damaging).

(Anonymous) 2014-02-25 03:53 am (UTC)(link)And I was not "manipulating" anything, the school was the main source of my anxiety, so I thought if I got acknowledgement for that, it would make it easier to get out of there, which I finally did without the help of any of them.
"couldn't be all there was to it"
That's a really far stretch. I do not particularly feel like elaborating on it.
But let me put it this way: what came to light was not something I knew, or could have known at the time.
While the way the doctor was going about it was like I was deliberately hiding or lying about something from my past, which was annoying as hell, didn't build trust, and most of all, was untrue.
But, who am I kidding? You'd support these people no matter if they screwed up. I'm sure they deserve a cookie for trying.
