Is Fandom an Offensive Word Now?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-25 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
so I just saw someone on tumblr saying "if you think it's okay to use the term "fandom", kill yourself"

But...that's what it's been called for a while now? Is 'fandom' offensive now? Why?

It's probably because people want to distance themselves from those kinds of fans and nerd culture.

I was really confused until I saw the word "tumblr." Now I'm amused and am hoping it's that person's reach at being an oppressed victim, etc.

...what?

I... I don't understand. Like, I can't think of any reason that might be even a little bit related to social justice that would make the word "fandom" offensive.

Maybe it's from people who really hate fans and nerds & fan culture?
Like: "If you're a furry kill yourself", that kind of thing?

They're obviously against the oppression of fan dommes.

Here....though the OP's thing was apparently deleted or something. *Shrug* Just reading the OP's statement made me go "wtf". But it looks like some other people are as confused as me.

I didn't mean to make anybody angry with this. I just sorta posted it without thinking too much about it. So apologize if some of y'all are annoyed with me.
starphotographs: I like him. He kind of looks and acts like one of my characters. (I did not know this when I started liking him!) (Victor (...>:|))

This is why that whole "OMG NO ONE EVER HAS TO EXPLAIN THEMSELVES EVAR!!1!" meme should have been nipped in the bud. People can now submit any weird moon-logic statement without comment and then shout down anyone who asks them WTF they're on about.

And then you have people like me, who read this shit and are driven up the walls wondering what the hell it means.

My brain just broke from stupid. Now I'm sad.

I'm absolutely stunned by the amount of people here who think this is serious?? this reads like a pretty typical tumblr joke.

If I had a dollar for every time I've seen someone flip out about a post on Tumblr that was an obvious joke or blatant troll....

I know. We'd all be rich. But we'd probably be just as rich if we had a dollar for every time someone said stupid shit like that with complete sincerity. I've seen it so often, I'm not 100% sure what's real and what's satire anymore.

Like that girl with the mole in a spot where bindis are placed who supposedly got harrassed for cultural appropriation. I'm not sure if the girl is a troll account, the asks are fake/trolls who jump on the rabid SJW train or whether parts of it are real.
