Mean girls..ugh

(Anonymous) 2014-02-25 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
So I'm a college student living in an all-girls dorm. About ten minutes ago I was in the elevator going up to my floor. It stopped and two other girls got on, no big deal. But then as I was getting off I saw them making these faces at each other--those wide-eyed, tight-lipped, eyebrows-raised faces that we can all recognize as meaning, "weird person ew."

At first I was kind of mad because I didn't get why they would be making those faces. But then I remembered I'm fat, ugly, my hair is in braids that make me look like a little kid, I'm wearing my pyjamas, and I started thinking, ...crap. They see me as one of those social rejects.

And now I'm in tears and thinking about how much I hate this stupid school. I don't have any friends here, my grades are slipping, and now I'm stuck questioning everything about myself just because of two dumb girls who just had to make a big show of making me feel gross. I'm so embarrassed.

Sorry for ranting. I don't have anyone to talk to.

OH NOES REGULAR PERSON WITH LIKE HAIR AND PAJAMAS AND SHIT!!1! D:

If you're their benchmark for weird, they probably don't get out much...

Yeah, seriously?

Back when I was living in a dorm, students in pajamas and braids was known as "8:00 am class." Of course, it was an all girls' school, but no one gave a shit.

That's what really bugged me about this! Sometimes you're just busy and don't bother with dressing up or doing your hair or anything. Are people seriously expected to GIVE A FUCK AT ALL TIMES now? Sounds exhausting...

my first thought was that they sound like overly uptight first-years who are still treating college like it's a fashion parade

Ugh. That sucks. But they're the ones acting like they're still in high school, when everybody else who's serious about school or whatever doesn't even care. Is there any way you can move to a different dorm?

If being in your pajamas in your dorm makes you a social reject in their eyes, then they obviously have not been in college long and/or are not in a difficult major. When I went to school it was generally accepted that living in the dorms meant seeing each other in every kind of unkempt state you could think of.

Try your best to make friends, I think that will help. I know it can be hard to reach out to other people, but just try starting conversations, be friendly and people will respond to that.

I am a fat and ugly antisocial nerd but I've still managed to make friends from all different backgrounds. Some people may automatically judge you from the beginning, but others are going to be more open then you think as long as you are open to them.

Girl dorms can definitely be a dangerous breeding ground for judgement, so if you really are having a tough time there then try chatting up people in your classes. And if you really need to, change dorms. Good luck!
starphotographs: ...I'm not that bad, though. And I don't even light things on fire! Well, not regularly... (Izaya (devious))

seeing each other in every kind of unkempt state you could think of.

You know, I think this applies to pretty much every situation where people share a roof. Even apartment complexes and stuff to some extent. It's a fact of life, best get used to it. :P

(Hell, I live in a duplex community, and neighbors probably see me in my PJs all the time. Why get dressed when you're just walking to the mailbox and then back inside? :/)

Oh yeah definitely, it varies from person to person how comfortable they feel but if I'm up early enough I see people in their robes and pajamas all the time (especially since there are a few retired people in my complex.) In my apartment there's a lot you can do without even leaving the building, so I've never really taken notice if someone looks like they just rolled out of bed.

College is probably where it's most frequent though since most schools don't have strict dress codes and people are often tired either from their school schedule and/or because they party a lot. Some people also really enjoy when they discover the freedom of not having parents or any authority figures telling them how to dress, and it is pretty nice when you don't feel the pressure to dress up.

Urgh, that's way awful, anon. :/ What a stupid thing to do in dorms, too- if there's anywhere people should be used to seeing pajamas, it's there. The embarrassment should be on them for behaving like jerks, not you for dressing casually, but I know that saying that doesn't really help when you're feeling down.

Maybe one of them farted in the elevator and they were shocked you didn't notice.

Wow, seriously?

They sounds like newbies. It's college. You are bound to run into people in their pyjamas, because believe me, when you get to final year, you stop giving a shit.

It's really tough not having friends at college. Does your college have student clubs or something like that? Maybe you could try to find one you enjoy, and see if you can make some friends that way.

And keep on being your awesome, super-comfortable self.
You don't exist for other people's enjoyment. You exist for YOU.
Think of college as going into it for YOUR benefit, because you want to get your money's worth at the end of it.

I don't mean to question your perception but since no one else is bringing this up, it's entirely plausible that they weren't reacting to you at all. They could've been raising eyebrows and smiling because of something they were talking about before they got in the elevator. Once I made eye contact with a woman on the street while I was coincidentally exclaiming "Bitch!" but I wasn't shouting at her.
