The hitchhiking thing, mostly. But then again I've read people who are exactly her age saying that it was only later in '81 that "stranger danger" started, so it's not the absolute stupidest thing for her to try hitching.

That reaction wouldn't even have occurred to me. In Germany, hitchhiking was perfectly normal and common well into the 90s. I've hitchhiked a bit when I was travelling in the US in the 90s too. Obviously there's a risk but it's not like you're guaranteed to run into the situation Page and Henry did.

When I hitchhiked, I was a lot more concerned about landing with a reckless driver.
