Really? What jurisdiction? My partner used to work as a solicitor representing people trying to get OUT of care, in northern Australia, and boy, the stupid reasons used to keep people in made her very ragey. Usually the clients kept in for stupid reasons were not white.

Holy crap, I'm so glad someone finally went and said it. I had similar experiences (but mostly with minors) who were basically stripped of all agency, because controlling parents either thought keeping them in was "the right thing" or because they simply wanted to hide their problem child away from the world. I know of way more examples of people going in against their will, than being kicked out against their will (I'm in Europe). The most horrific example I know was a sexual abuse victim who is bipolar basically being coerced by her mother to have electroshock therapy (I didn't even know that shit still existed till then), and because she's financially dependent on her mother and meek and gentle in nature, she did it. She now as massive memory loss, but hey, she's more manageable. And with any luck she actually forgot her abuser! This particular girl was an adult (barely), but still dependent. It disgusts me so much I want to vomit.
