Episode 3.20: Echo House

(Anonymous) 2014-02-26 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
I was really disappointed by how bored I was for most of this episode. About the only real, honest-to-god high point for me was Sheriff Stilinski breaking my heart over a pillow. And I guess the twins' rounds of "And THEN we fight?" were kind of funny. But other than that...

I expected after all the whining Stiles has done about being a virgin, his first time wouldn't have been quite so...polished. But I'm super fucking annoyed at the corners of fandom who are dogging on him because he (apparently) had sex with Malia who was clearly an "EMOTIONALL STUNTED VICTIM OF RAGING HORMONES!!!!" Way to take away her agency, fandom corner of self-proclaimed feminists and allies. Oh, and fuck you.

And that fight scene with Kincaid was kind of lame. Scott's an alpha, but he hardly EVER seems like it. I'm fine with him trying to be a No Kill Alpha, but he shouldn't be such a useless wimp 90 percent of the time.

I figure Scott might have inherited Derek's inability as Alpha to EVER win a fight ever. Unlike Derek, Scott is aware of this, and so surrounds himself with usefully violent individuals.

I enjoyed the episode more than you did, but I agree about the sex scene. I wanted a bigger deal made out of Stiles finally losing his virginity.

I'm really glad I haven't read any reactions like that :/

Scott has definitely attended the Derek Hale School of Fighting ™

I didn't watch the episode, but I saw some of those reactions about Stiles/Malia. And my favorites are the hardcore Sterek shippers going, "I don't hate it because she gets in the way of my ship" I hate it because, ~"EMOTIONALL STUNTED VICTIM OF RAGING HORMONES!!"~

I wouldn't hate the sex scene half as much if the writing wasn't so inconsistent and terrible. I mean, he is basically possessed by an insane killer demon fox and she should, for all intents and purposes, be on the emotional level of a 9-13 year old. So finding the scene good/hot/logical is really out of the question for me.

+ Exactly.

+1

And it just seemed really out of place and shoehorned in.

I think it's reasonable to come out of her first episode with the assumption that she's the emotional equivalent of someone younger, but I think the way she was presented in this episode pretty much invalidated that assumption.

While I'm tempted to believe that, I really think that a show should take a little more time than half an episode to establish things like that before jumping right into the sex.

Basically yes. I know the show didn't go there with Malia, but I can't get over how sudden it was and how wrong it is for them to be having sex without a condom in a goddamn mental institution. Even if Malia was totes fine, NOPE.

"The nogitsune is about to take over? Great, I still have a few minutes to get off!" No. No show.

I just don't understand why everyone in this show keeps having sex at completely inappropriate moments. Every time I watch, it's like somebody's hooking up or making out when lives are at stake, or someone just died, or they're in the middle of a really serious investigation, etc. etc.

Honestly I only care about Stiles, the Sheriff and Scott's mom, and Kira. Everyone else can go away. (This is especially ironic since I resisted watching the show for a long time because I was convinced I didn't like Dylan. Oops)

Same anon, but I forgot to mention that Nogitsune Stiles is freaking awesome. I love love love him. *_*

Though I wish they would have bothered trying to write 己 correctly, instead of just passing off a backwards '5' as kanji, but hey. I'm trying not to nitpick.

I really liked the Pack McCall hijinks but the Alpha Twins need to go. On the other hand, they're useful muscle for Scott who, as you say, doesn't really get in fights so much.

I'm not too fond of Stiles/Malia but I really like the outrage over OMG SHE'S MENTALLY EIGHT/NINE YEARS OLD HOW VERY DARE SHE BE HAVING SEX AAAAAHHH. The idea that she's mentally a child was a fanon one; canon obviously didn't go that way. Shush fandom!

Overall, I wasn't too impressed with this episode. And it kind of seems like most people feel that way.

YES. Said much better and much more concisely than I did.

Urg. I don't even want to think about the sex scene. Or makeout scene, whatever. (Which is such an odd thing for me to be saying because I want to see Stiles get some, and remove his shirt at some point in the series, but...nope.) It was so awkward and such terrible, inappropriate timing for both of them and I just don't like it. (Really, in a mental institution? REALLY?!) Right now I'm curious if Malia is going to turn out to be a 'baddie' because I don't trust Jeff and after the way Derek's hookups have went, I would not be the slightest bit surprised. (What was with the smirk and the glowing eyes at the end?)

And IDEK about Stiles. At this point I feel like I can't trust anything that is happening with him.

But I did love the little Scott and Stiles scene in the first of the show (my babiessss), then the Sheriff freaking out about leaving Stiles' pillow at home. That killed me. His concern and love for Stiles is one of the best things about the show, hands down. (And while we're talking about the Sheriff, what about that scene from the preview? Good lord, this is some traumatizing shit.)

As for the twins, I just hate them. I'm sorry, I can't not. They haven't done anything to make me feel differently, and I can't get over Boyd. If they're still around next season I'll deal with it, but I would not be the slightest bit sad to see them gone.

As for Scott being a failwolf, pretty much every 'good' wolf in the show is so I don't feel like I can judge him too much for it. (Derek can't win a fight, Isaac is mostly useless, we never got to see Erica or Boyd do much, etc.) The twins do make fights a bit more interesting, but that doesn't win them many points in my book.

And I agree that the episode was mostly boring. Compared to the last few episodes it was a huge letdown. I liked the scene with Lydia and the twins (+ Scott and Allison) planning the 'heist', seeing Parrish again (even if it was only briefly and just resulted in his pain) and the Chris and Derek scene, but the rest didn't do it for me. (Oh! That one look from Stiles after the Nogitsune took over...that did it for me. But yea, other than that, nada.)

I do not understand why Jeff Davis thinks "Stiles is so unstable and unsafe he will lock himself up in a mental ward -> oh this is the perfect time for sex and relationships to blossom!" It makes no sense. Also they've made such a big deal about his virginity I kind of expected....more?

Overall disappointed in the episode, but not terribly surprised.

lol, Davis doesn't care what makes sense, he just likes drama. Maybe he thinks all his audience wants is SEX SEX SEX, but that is not the case. I know we've had some pretty random or ill timed makeouts before, but this one...this one takes the cake. I couldn't believe they were actually going there; still can't.

(Maybe there's something more to it? I won't rule anything out right now.)

I saw someone say once that Jeff Davis doesn't care about narrative or story, he just really likes writing scenes. I think that sums up Teen Wolf pretty well, and I admit he's actually great at writing/creating scenes, it's just that putting them together often makes no sense.

Yea, I can see that. There are so many small details that either don't seem to fit or just go completely unexplained and sometimes that bothers me SO much. The age thing for one, but he leaves so many things unsaid and sometimes what he's 'hinting' at is not in the least bit obvious. A lot of his story arcs have been...kind of terrible, but for the most part I am really digging 3B. I just wish he was better at connecting the dots.

I'm not convinced they had sex.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-26 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, they could have, but the way they ended up sort of seemed like it had just been a make-out session. Whatever, it could have gone either way, but I wouldn't be entirely surprised by Stiles talking to Scott about it later and it turns out not to have been sex. Then again, I did sort of wonder if the "body change" could have anything to do with virginity.

Scott's powers have always seemed uneven to me - sometimes he's the most powerful wolf, but then others he just doesn't seem to know how to fight. I did wonder if he's still having issues with changing and thus his abilities, but they didn't bring that up.

My main hope about the next few eps is some Chris/Derek teamups and tag-team fights. Derek interacting and working with other adults who are not his smarmy uncle will do wonders for him. Chris can be his Shoot First Ask Later Anonymous sponsor or something.
