Characters who you can't imagine without some other character

(Anonymous) 2014-02-26 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Are there any characters whose identity you feel is defined so closely with that of another character that you can't conceive of that character apart from the other character, or have any interest in reading fic about that character if the fic doesn't involve the other character?

(I was thinking about this with Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. I love both of them, but I lose all interest in any fic that is about one and in which the other barely appears, and now that I think of it, there are quite a few of these kinds of characters for me.)

Scully without Mulder. Mulder without Scully.

Absolutely. I agree so hard.

David Starsky and Kenneth Hutchinson. I don't think either of them even really count as a whole human being when they're apart.

Isaac and Miria. But that might be kind of a given.

Equius and Nepeta. Not quite as extreme as what you're saying, since I would happily read stories starring one where the other is just a bit part. But if the other doesn't show up at all, it just seems wrong.

Fushimi Saruhiko and Yata Misaki.

Kubota Makoto and Tokito Minoru.

Horatio Hornblower and William Bush.

Most definitely.

Because of this comment, I watched the first episode of K Project and it was so fucking cool so far. I'm actually too excited to watch the rest because I don't want to miss anything.

Thanks for mentioning it, anon! This is probably the best rec I've had off this comm.

You're very welcome - hehe, you know what's funny? I got the rec from the K secret a week or two ago XD

Have fun! I know I had!

This is kind of a messed up one, but Derek Hale without Kate Argent in his past somewhere. AU fic where Kate doesn't happen and Derek is happy and well adjusted just reads as original character to me. The two are so intertwined in my interpretation of the character we know.
elaminator: (Star Trek: Into Darkness - Kirk (smile))

More the latter in all cases rather than the former, but:

Aziraphale & Crowley
Holmes & Watson
Lynley & Havers
Jareth & Sarah
Rick & Evie O'Connell
Jim West & Artemus Gordon
Hannibal & B.A. & Murdock & Face
Morticia & Gomez
rubbertea: hugh skinner making a ridiculous face while wearing a ridiculous hat (hugh does that hat even exist)

Grantaire without Enjolras (Les Mis)
John Reese without Harold Finch and vice versa (Person of Interest; yeah, I ship it, sue me), also Harold without Bear
Legolas without Gimli and Gimli without Legolas
Sam without Frodo though I do want to read about his life after Frodo leaves
nightscale: Starbolt (Pokémon: Mew)

Thor and Loki, specifically when it comes to Loki tbh. Thor I can watch or read going about by himself or interacting with other characters but Loki for me needs to be around Thor or thinking about him a lot. Personally I just find them both far more interesting around each other(and more-so on Loki's end because without Thor he's just a generic asshole villain(which I would still enjoy but their complicated relationship is what mostly appeals to me)).

As for some others: Sam and Dean, Fili and Kili.
