Re: Recommendations for WoW?

Last year they lost just over half their revenue in 7 months. The game has been around for a decade, the lion's share of the historical playerbase has moved on, the subscription model is effectively dead (and that's why Elder Scrolls Online is doomed -- well, that and it doesn't seem to be very good anyway) and the traditional MMO (which WoW exemplifies) is in decline in favour of hybrid games (such as F2P MMOFPS games like Team Fortress 2 or the vaporware Survarium) and MOBAs.

Meh. I expect it will hold steady at 6-7 million for quite a long time.

It was at 12 million just a couple years ago. Going from that to 7.8 million is a pretty sharp drop for an MMO of WoW's age and popularity.

I'm sure there'll be a good collection of hard-core players who won't budge, and of course there's always gold farmers, but I don't expect it to be above 5 million by this time next year.

Which is still much larger than any other MMO out there except League of Legends (which is not really an MMO). Five million isn't exactly small change.

Yeah, but that's my point. I don't think subscriber numbers translate to success anymore. WoW is very old and a lot of money has gone into maintaining it; and I do think it's going to be hemorrhaging players over the next few years, even if they do switch to F2P. Activision is probably going to be giving it the hairy eyeball very soon if they're not doing so already.

No it's not. EVERYONE thinks its about it about to die, but it keeps coming back. With Warlods of Drzaenor coming in and the creators mentioning more expacs in the future, yeah no. WoW is nowhere near dying.

You same damn people said the same thing about SWTOR, but it's raking in cash and still going.
