Anyone have experience with partial dentures?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-26 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
My sister has to get partial dentures. She is REALLY depressed about it because she is only 30 and dentures are for "old people".

When she was 16 she fell face first into the side of a tub. Well now the dentist is saying that they need to remove like 3 of her back, bottom teeth and (more importantly) her four front teeth.

She is feeling terrible about having to have these dentures so young (how they will look, how they will feel for her boyfriend, having to take them out and be toothless at night).

Does anyone know anything I can tell her to make her feel better? Or have personal experience with them?

No personal experience, but an aesthetic reassurance: I have a friend I met in college who'd already had a partial for some years before I met him. I'd known him for years before I found this out, I only know it because he mentioned it, and even though I've seen him remove it I couldn't tell you which teeth it's replacing because there's no visual difference at all.

I don't think it's that unusual to have partials? My mom has a partial for her front teeth, and you'd never know it by looking.

I'm trained as a Dental Assistant [which covers dentures and some of the lab work that goes into making them] and there's a very, very good chance that no one will be able to tell that she has them just by looking. Most places put a lot of effort into making the dentures match their patients teeth color-wise, and shaped like actual teeth*. As far as feel goes, chances are they won't feel too different unless they're made from something funky - which isn't likely to happen. Just remind her that she really needs to take care of her gums - and that, unless the dentist has said it's not possible already, she might be able to get implants in the future.

*As much because they tend to work better that way as because they look better

I have a friend in his 30s with full dentures. They look just fine IMO.

I doubt they'll look off at all. And if her boyfriend really cares that much, that's an issue in itself.

I'm also someone who can't speak personally, but I'll second that anon. My Dad had to get dentures about five years, and you 100% cannot tell that they are false unless he removes them. Not to mention they look significantly better than his old teeth!

Like him, I also imagine there's going to be a rough adjustment period for your sister as she gets used to it. Encourage her to give it time and let her vent when she needs to.

My dad got them while relatively young due to bad teeth and you can't tell when they're in.

FWIW, she could look into dental implants. The problem there is that it's probably very expensive (it required general anesthetic and an oral surgeon) and a painful procedure because they're basically drilling into your jawbone, putting in a steel base and then fixing an artificial tooth over that base.

I was in a car accident when I was little, and eventually had to get a partial bridge for my front teeth when I was around 20. People can't tell the difference.
