On the bottom is most environmentally sound, isn't it? Warm air rises, etc. I've never had a cold-bottom fridge. Between side and top, I'd probably go with top. But it's only because that's what I'm most used to! I doubt it really affects by cold-storage experience that much.

We have a side by side fridge; one side is the freezer and the other the fridge. It's much roomer than the freezer on top, I think. But it doesn't really matter either way. LOL
